2018 Best Nine

February 5, 2019

2018, over and out already… It was definitely an interesting one for Little Cake Garden, in many unexpected ways.

I know everyone’s Instagram’s Feeds and Stories have been littered with #bestnine images and the proverbial “walk down memory lane”, but the end of year is always a good time to be reflective…

As stated in last year’s round up, I love finding out what our followers’ favourite cakes have been and this year, I have been surprised by the outcome of our top nine images on Instagram, let’s have a look through!

9. Autumn Rhapsody

This grey two-tiered beauty was for a styled shoot by the lovely Holly from Holly’s House. We were asked to contribute to this Autumnal shoot back in September and jumped at the chance to create something different.

As you can see, this cake veers away from the typical romantic vibe we usually work to capture and ventures into a more moody, ethereal concept, which we just adore.

The shoot took place at Bonham Barns and was captured beautifully by the talented Veronika Ward.

Fun fact about this cake: we originally adorned it with flowers, but they were too different from the rest of the shoot, so the decision was made to minimise the luxe element of the cake and place some glittered ribbon to tone down the muted effect of the concrete – we think it worked wonders.

8. Spanish Peach

Earlier on in the year, we asked our Instagram followers to decide between one of two colour schemes; Powder Blue & Gold and Peach & Silver. As you can see by our entry for number 8, the latter combo won!

I’d seen this gorgeous invitation suite on Instagram that I was quite determined to translate into a design, so that’s exactly what I was going for with this display cake. Rob was never quite sold on this colour scheme and is always a bit tentative in incorporating silver lustre into a design, but I think, judging by the fact it’s in our top 9, I’ll claim this as a rare win for myself! ;)

7. Pink Passion

The first of three naked cakes to make it into our top nine, at number 7, the chocolate one! To be more precise, chocolate and passion fruit. This cake was for one of our summer couples and the brief was just delightful.

The naked/semi naked cake has lasted far longer than expected, which means that us cake decorators have to seek creative ways to ensure that they don’t all end up looking alike.

Luckily, different colour schemes and floral accessories mean that you’d be hard pushed to have two identical naked cakes, but it was still fun to add the macarons, to give it a slightly different feel.

6. Gold Dust

One of my personal highlights from 2018 was the launch of our Look Book. We wrote about the evening we had to celebrate here.

This cake was one of the designs from our Look Book and is one of my favourites. Lustre – check, marble – check, sugar flowers – check, geometric elements – check! What more could you want in a modern cake?!

5. Lapis Lazuli

I’m surprised this one isn’t number one with the amount of saves, comments and shares this cake got! Designed for the Look Book, it didn’t quite make it into our Look Book, but was a huge hit on display on the night of the launch.

Again, it really does pull in all the trends, particularly the bottom tier which resembles precious stone. So many weddings this year have included stone elements; from marble to agate and I think it is a trend we’ll see more of in 2019. I got the inspiration for the top tier from a laser cut invitation design and couldn’t have been more pleased with how this cake turned out.

4. Wiltshire Combe

Semi-naked cake number two on the list and it’s this three tier splendor that we drove all the way to “the prettiest village in England”. Flowers by Passion left these gorgeous flowers for us to work with and they adorned the cake perfectly.

With the aim to always capture the love story of our couples, the base is my favourite feature of this cake.

You can’t quite see it in the picture, but the bottom of the cake is covered in edible sand with tiny footprints imprinted in.

When I met with Jonny and Bonnie, they told me of Jonny’s lovely proposal on a beach in Los Angeles. As they were walking along the beach, Bonnie spotted a sign, which read: “And after you have whiled away the hours on the sugar-white sand, remember to take your memories and leave only footprints.” I was determined to get that in the cake somewhere.

This cake was also recently featured in the “Real Weddings” section of Brides magazine, which we were thrilled to see.

3. Golden Lava

A four tier drip cake with gold drips and fresh pink flowers for one of our March couples. The cake makes me smile because it reminds me of a wonderful short film by Pixar about two volcanoes, overcoming obstacles to finally come together in love. SWOON! Isn’t that like so many of the greatest love stories?

I’ll leave the link here, you can thank me later.

2. A Flat Lay

I have to say, this is the most surprising of all the entries. Surprising that it bypassed cakes to get into the top nine in the first place (!) and surprising that it is so highly placed! I’m not quite sure whether I should be offended or flattered?!

This post was part of the fabulous #marchmeetthemaker challenge on Instagram. Every March, hundreds of creatives join in with this challenge in an effort to share more about the behind the scenes of the brand. Prompt number 8 was a flat lay, which I made from an amalgamation of the left over flowers from the Golden Lava cake, a styled shoot from 2017 and some props that I often use for styling.

I’m glad it was received so well, perhaps I ought to do more flat lays?!

1. Rustic Charm

And it’s a semi-naked cake for the top spot. After a mad night at our Look Book launch, we drove the 30 miles to Oxford to deliver this five tier cake for Pardeep and Rajni.

Victoria sponge all the way through, it was all sweetness and light for this one. The cake was placed in one of the most beautiful marquee set ups I have ever seen and drew many compliments from the other vendors at the wedding.

So there we have it, another year down, another Best Nine completed.

We are very much looking forward to all the highlights 2019 will bring and we will surely keep you updated!
